Our Patron Saint

St. George

St. George, also known as Geevarghese Sahda in the Indian Orthodox Church, is highly esteemed among believers. He holds the esteemed title of patron saint within the Indian Orthodox community, where he is fervently invoked for protection, particularly in times of peril. According to tradition, St. George served as a soldier in the Roman emperor Diocletion’s army. He faced persecution for his Christian faith and was ultimately martyred in AD 303 on April 23rd. One of the most renowned tales surrounding St. George is his valiant slaying of a snake-dragon to rescue a young girl, the king’s daughter, from being sacrificed. This heroic act is a central theme in depictions of the saint. Given his military background, St. George is honored as a military saint and is also recognized as the patron saint of several countries, including England, Georgia, Malta, and Ethiopia.

About Us

The Indian Orthodox Church London

St. George’s Indian Orthodox Church conducts its weekly Sunday services at St. Margaret Pattens Church on Rood Lane in London. The Indian Orthodox community has been active in London since the 1970s, previously holding Holy Eucharist ceremonies at St. Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe Church near Blackfriars every Sunday.

The St George’s Indian Orthodox Church, London is a church under the UK, Europe, and Africa Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church of India.

Starting as a modest community, our congregation has blossomed over the years. Each Sunday, we joyously receive newcomers, including students, to join us in worship at our church nestled in London’s bustling heart. Serving our London community fills us with immense pride and honor as we uphold the tradition of service dating back to the 1970s.
